OpenAI Is Merging ChatGPT’s Chat and Work Tabs in Its Desktop App

OpenAI is merging the Chat and Work tabs in the ChatGPT desktop app, starting with select users, while Codex stays separate but shares the same usage allowance.

OpenAI Is Merging ChatGPT’s Chat and Work Tabs in Its Desktop App

OpenAI is simplifying the ChatGPT desktop app. The company is combining the Chat and Work tabs inside the ChatGPT section into a single experience, while Codex stays a separate part of the app, according to an email OpenAI sent to users and reported by TechCrunch on Monday, November 2. The change was also covered by TBreak and SQ Magazine.

Why OpenAI is doing it. The desktop app currently has several options: ChatGPT and Codex sections, plus Chat and Work tabs inside ChatGPT. That can make it hard to know where to work. OpenAI’s email said the merge will let people move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place, according to TechCrunch.

What the merged experience does. Users will be able to bring in files and plugins, ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation or complete tasks on the web, and review and guide the work as it proceeds. In practice, the idea is that a conversation and a task no longer have to start in different places.

Who gets it first. Select users will get the combined experience first so OpenAI can gather feedback, and a wider rollout will follow. One report notes that OpenAI gave no timing for the broader release.

Shared usage limits. ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same token allowance pool, according to TechCrunch. OpenAI says most users will not be affected, but some may have to wait for usage resets more often, depending on how much they use and which model they choose. Another report links the shared pool to an earlier plan for Plus, Pro and Business subscribers, with a start in December, so the exact timing of that change is not fully clear from the coverage.

The competitive backdrop. TechCrunch notes that Anthropic merged the chat and Cowork functions of Claude into one screen in September 2026. The move suggests the main AI assistants are converging on a single window for conversation and agent-style work, rather than separate apps for each.

Why it matters. For people who use ChatGPT for both quick questions and longer jobs, one tab may mean fewer steps and less confusion. The shared allowance is the trade-off: heavy users of Codex or long-running tasks may reach their limits sooner. Readers in the US and UK who pay for a plan should watch for in-app notices about limits.

What to watch. Look for the date of the wider rollout, how usage resets work under the shared pool, and whether the web version of ChatGPT gets the same layout.
