Apple has confirmed that more than 50 third-party apps are already adapted, or will be soon, for the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone. Apps built with the new iOS 27.1 SDK can adjust to the phone’s outer screen, inner screen and seated pose. Older apps still run, but they may not use the full display.
What Apple announced
Apple says the first 50-plus apps are either optimized now or will be shortly. Fully adapted apps will carry a “Made for iPhone Duo” badge on their App Store pages, and Apple plans curated collections of compatible titles. It expects to add more apps through the year.
Apps Apple has named
Apple’s examples show how each app uses the larger screen:
- Netflix: browsing on the outer screen, with playback moving to the inner screen when you open the phone.
- Zoom: shared content and participants shown together on the inner screen.
- Slack: more of the workspace visible at once, including channels and related content.
- MLB: games, scores, stats and highlights across the inner screen’s full width.
- Salesforce: dashboards and customer data on the larger display.
Apple’s highlighted list also includes Lyft, DoorDash, OpenTable, Flighty, Fantastical, Instagram, Paramount+, Prime Video, American Airlines, United Airlines, Yelp and NYT Cooking.
Microsoft Word and Outlook are not ready at launch. Apple describes “desktop-class” updates for them, expected within the next few weeks.
How apps adapt
Developers use updated interface tools in the iOS 27.1 SDK. With them, an app can switch layouts across the phone’s configurations:
- Outer screen: the normal phone experience
- Inner screen: expanded content and multitasking
- Tabletop or seated pose: a layout for when the phone is propped up
Apps built on older SDKs still work, according to the reports, but they may show a standard iPhone layout instead of filling the larger screen.
What this means for buyers
Apps are the big question mark for any new foldable. A large screen is only useful if the software uses it, and Apple’s early list covers streaming, video calls, work chat, sports, travel and food delivery. The missing Word and Outlook support shows that some productivity apps will arrive later, and the roster is still growing.
If you rely on a specific app, check its App Store page for the “Made for iPhone Duo” badge before you buy. Pricing and availability vary by region, so check Apple’s site for current details.
