Snap Settles Teen Social Media Addiction Lawsuit Before Trial

Snap has settled a lawsuit from two teenagers who said its platform fueled depression and eating disorders, avoiding what would have been the first trial in a wave of social media addiction cases against the company.

Snap Settles Teen Social Media Addiction Lawsuit Before Trial

Snap has settled a lawsuit brought by two teenagers who said its platform was designed to be addictive and contributed to their mental health problems, ending the case before it reached a jury. The settlement was first reported by Reuters and covered by TechCrunch and Engadget on Monday, November 2.

What the plaintiffs alleged. The two teenagers, who are identified in court documents only by initials, said Snapchat’s design contributed to depression, anxiety and eating disorders, and Engadget reports they alleged it led to self-harm. According to TechCrunch, they described compulsive habits linked to features such as autoplay and infinite scrolling, and said they began using YouTube as early as age 3 and other social platforms around age 9.

The settlement. The terms have not been disclosed, and neither outlet names the court. A Snap spokesperson said the parties were pleased to have resolved the matter amicably, and also pointed to the company’s safeguards, safety tutorials and partnerships with experts. The plaintiffs’ lawyer confirmed the settlement, according to Engadget.

Why it was a big case. TechCrunch says the trial would have been Snap’s first in a broader wave of social media litigation. Engadget reports that jury selection began the week before and the trial was due to start later in November. Snap’s chief executive Evan Spiegel was expected to testify, which would have been the first time a Snapchat founder appeared in court in a social media addiction trial, according to Engadget.

The other defendants. The plaintiffs had already settled their claims against Meta, TikTok and YouTube. Engadget notes that after Meta settled the week before, Snap was the only remaining defendant. TechCrunch adds that Snap had also settled its other cases that were scheduled for trial.

What happened earlier this year. Engadget reports that a separate case brought by a 20-year-old woman went to trial against Meta, YouTube, Snap and TikTok earlier in 2026. Snap and TikTok settled before that trial, and the jury ruled against Meta and YouTube and ordered them to pay $6 million in damages.

Why it matters. Social media companies face thousands of lawsuits in federal and state courts alleging they knowingly designed their platforms to hook young users and contributed to a youth mental health crisis, according to TechCrunch. Settling before trial keeps evidence and executive testimony out of public view, which means the central legal questions are still untested for several of these companies. For parents and teens in the US and UK, the practical steps remain the same: use the time-limit and parental controls the apps offer.

What to watch. Look for the next case to reach a jury, whether other companies keep settling, and whether lawmakers use the cases to push for design rules for products used by minors.
