SpaceX Reportedly Wants to Buy Boost Mobile to Take On AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon

The Washington Post reports that SpaceX is in talks with EchoStar over buying Boost Mobile or gaining access to its network, a move that could help Starlink build a wireless service to rival AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

SpaceX Reportedly Wants to Buy Boost Mobile to Take On AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon

SpaceX may be about to become a phone company. The Washington Post reported on Monday, November 2, that SpaceX wants to buy Boost Mobile from EchoStar, according to TechCrunch. Other coverage, including Data Center Dynamics and Android Authority, describes talks about either a purchase or access to Boost’s network. Neither company had confirmed a deal when the reports were published.

What Boost is. Boost Mobile is a mobile virtual network operator owned by EchoStar, which means it does not run its own cell towers. It leases capacity from AT&T and T-Mobile, according to TechCrunch. EchoStar has about 7.5 million customers across Boost Mobile and its other service, GenMobile, and Boost covers most of the 48 contiguous US states. TechCrunch’s article does not give a price for any deal.

The obstacle. Because Boost leases its network from AT&T and T-Mobile, those carriers might need to approve a sale. The Post’s sources said network leases are usually nontransferable, which could complicate any purchase or network-access arrangement.

What is reported about the talks. Elon Musk reportedly spoke directly with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen in October about acquiring Boost. TechCrunch says Musk had already approached AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon about buying capacity on their networks, and all three turned the request down. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile each have more than 100 million subscribers, so Boost’s 7.5 million is small by comparison.

The groundwork. In 2024, SpaceX began offering satellite access to T-Mobile subscribers. In 2025, it bought $17 billion of wireless spectrum from EchoStar, which could help Starlink reach indoors, something it currently struggles with. When the spectrum purchase was announced, Musk wrote on X that it was the last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle needed for SpaceX to provide complete phone coverage in America.

What SpaceX would gain. TechCrunch says a Boost deal would help SpaceX build a hybrid cellular and satellite network that could take it into fourth place among US wireless providers. Boost’s network access would let Starlink serve devices outdoors and fall back on cell towers where satellite signals cannot reach, which is a gap satellite-only service has so far had.

Why it matters. The US mobile market is dominated by three carriers, and a new national player with its own satellite network would be a rare change. For customers, it could mean new plans and more competition on price and coverage, although any service would take time to build and the deal is not agreed. Regulators and the carriers that supply Boost’s network would also have a say in how far it goes.

What to watch. Look for confirmation or denial from SpaceX and EchoStar, a price, any response from AT&T and T-Mobile on their network leases, and what regulators say. Some analysts have questioned how the report framed the talks, so details may change.
